Today's New York Post reports that Iraqi leaders are saying that when Barack Obama visited the country in July, he made a major point of asking the Iraqis to delay their negotiations to get U.S. troops out of Iraq. He wanted the Iraqis to wait until after after the U.S. elections and the entry of a new U.S. administration before sealing a deal to end U.S. involvement in Iraq.
The left will say the Bushies and the Iraqis (and the NY Post, for that matter) are conspiring against Barry on this one. The right will say that it's clear that Barry only wants to get political gain from this and isn't really as concerned about our troops as he acts. Regardless, it's one of the more interested political stories of the day. It's worth a read.
The Post makes a good case to say that any attempts to stall negotiations would work out badly and delay the process horribly, possibly putting off a new draft agreement into May of 2010 due to the political process in Iraq, the time it will take any new president to get an Iraq ambassador in place in Baghdad, and the time it takes to hammer out an agreement. Obama says he wants troops out by 2010, so that timeline doesn't work very well for him.
